For my Mothers request, here is an excerpt from my as yet unpublished short story, The Glass Mannequin... “I’ll do it,” said the glass mannequin as he slumped on the high backed chair amidst a sea of broken dolls. “Do what?” I replied. “Hurt myself.” “In what way?” I asked already seeing the truth held in his right hand. “I intend to score my skin all over with this steel wire brush. Then, unlike before, the paint will permeate the fissures and permanently stain me red.” As he spoke, his face looked hollow as if he wanted something that he knew he could never have. Feigning puzzlement, “Why red?” Looking deep into my own, his eyes dazzled like diamonds in the sun as he said, “Because it is the color of love.” “Being transparent is cold,” he continued, looking off, his eyes losing their sparkle. “Like being dead. Like a ghost. I don’t feel…I just am. But if I could become the right color…I could feel. I know it is true.” “How do you know?” Turning his gaze back to me, “It is difficult to convey…” Then he added, “Like colors, endlessly colliding within my very depths. Testing some unseen blockade within me, waiting on a chance to burst forth into this gray world.” With this he touched his left hand to his breast. Behind the glass hand, through the clear chest, I could see his crystalline heart like a massive asymmetric diamond. A soft white glow emanated from the faceted organ slowly pulsing in the dim, cold light of the vast room. “This thought even haunts my dreams.” “You dream,” I said leaning forward as the warmth of satisfaction shot through me. ...hope you enjoyed the short read. Alison, I will post an excerpt from Ulrich & The Golden Heart another day. :)
