For my friends in Harris County Memorial MUD. (this includes areas of Memorial Parkway HOA South of Highland Knolls, Oak Park Trails, and Westgreen Park, Katy, Texas): Memorial MUD is having a bond and tax rate election. They are asking authorization for $28,050,000 in bonds to be sold over the next 30 years. The are also asking for authorization to increase the tax rate from the current $0.54 to $1.50. Please consider the information below and vote. 1) I appreciate the current board service and trust them to use our funds wisely. 2) MUD elections have very little visibliity and the members of the board could be replaced by anyone who knows the system and can get 100 friends in the district to vote. 3) While Memorial MUD did have bond election information on their new web site, they did not add the election location and time until I addressed the board at their Monday meeting. 4) The Board decided to go for the entire 30-years of bond authoization at once. I would prefer having a bond election for $5-6M every 5-6 years for expected expenses rather than $30M that could be spent at any time. For one thing, all of the current voters will move out long before 30 years and future owners deserve to have input into their spending and tax rates. 5) The Board has effectively managed our taxes and reduced the tax rate from the existing limit of $1.30 to $0.54. This is great. Now they are asking for authorization go beyond the current limit of $1.30 to $1.50. That is three times the current tax rate. With little or no discussion and information among the taxpayers. Because of these reasons, I recommend voting AGAINST both proposals at this time. See the link below for the board information on the election and the polling location at a residence in Oak Park Trails. Note: It appears that Memorial MUD contracted someone to print and distribute information but that has not happened yet. The election early voting has been last week and this week. I was the 13th voter. Its hard to vote when you dont even know there is an election, or when and where to vote.
