For our investigation into prison fees, we turned to a storytelling medium we arent used to: video. As the perennially old-school watchdog we fancy ourselves to be, text-based stories are our default — but we thought the people and emotion behind this story in particular lent themselves to something new. This challenge called for six months of very close collaboration between reporters Dan Wagner and Eleanor Bell, and as is the case with a lot of our stories, some of their best material didnt make it into the final investigation. In this Q&A post with Dan and Eleanor, we cover some of those findings, along with other behind-the-scenes clips from their reporting.
