For people who look down on social programs, such as food stamps, or housing assistance- READ THIS! Heres what these programs you think are so bad REALLY do. Scenario: A family of a mother, her husband, and three children. The mother has two jobs (both minimum wage), the husband has a full time job (with overtime galore). The children are all under 10 years old. The husband ends up being severely abusive (by that I mean children often get to see their own blood) to both the children, and the mother. The mother eventually finds the strength (and finances) to take the children far away from the horrid man- all the way to another state! The mother, now sole provider for the three children, looks desperately for work, does find work, but the wages paid to her are not enough to sustain both shelter, and food for her three children, not to mention herself. She manages somehow to feed, clothe, and provide shelter for the three children with the extremely meager wages her boss pays her. She does this by not getting herself new clothes, by skipping meals, by doing without so the children may have necessities. Sometimes, the oldest boy notices that she feeds them, but does not eat anything herself. Sometimes, when the mother takes the children out to the store to get them clothes, the oldest notices his mothers clothes have a hole or two- this confuses the boy until much later in life, when he realizes the sacrifice his mother made to give the children whatever she could. One day the eldest realizes that those things that looked like checks that his mother paid for much of the food she fed her children were actually food stamps. Without those things, there simply wouldnt have been enough to have shelter AND sustenance. Food Stamps saved that childs meager life. His mother went through hardship I dare not imagine for the sake of the three kids, and she did it without complaint. The IDEA behind programs such as food stamps is this: Your employer more often than not, will pay you juuuuust enough to abide by the law. This amount, even at full time, is enough- barely- to have a hovel to live in, and if youre lucky, 2 meals a day. Working hard every day will allow you to live- but nothing more. NOW- you give that person food stamps, housing assistance, things like that, and that person (through the money saved) will be able to pull themselves up a bit economically- buy a house, perhaps becoming one of the Middle Class. For many, the ONLY chance they have at any better future is such, and without, they will only sink further into economic ruin. I also want to say, I bet that kid believes his mother is truly a Saint.
