For personal reference when I forget details down the road... Last night was my first trial with melatonin as a sleep aid. After getting input here from a number of friends, I decided to go with the 5mg dose to see what happens. Generally speaking, it was more of a success than I expected (but I didnt expect much). I took the capsule around 8:15 or so, took a shower, and then headed to bed to read. By 9, I was having a hard time staying awake, and I was reading the same page over and over. Granted, I had been up since 12:30 am, I had my CPAP on, and I had taken 1/2 an ambien, but thats 50% less than normal. I turned out the light and fell asleep. Thats in quotes as I dont think I dropped completely off for 15 to 30 minutes, but I wasnt quite awake either. The positive is that I didnt get up until 3:45 (anything remotely over six hours qualifies as a success for me). The strangeness was the dreams. They were far more vivid than normal, and the subject matter could qualify as nightmarish. Actually, it would have made for an interesting horror/drama pilot, where the main character ends up killing anyone he meets, and he has no way to stop it from happening. No, Im not planning on killing anyone today, nor have I killed anyone since I woke up... Bottom line is that my first night on melatonin provided more sleep than normal, along with six hours of TV-quality entertainment as a side benefit. I also have 2.5 pills of zolpidem left instead of 2. :)
