For the past couple of days, I have been asked to write my thoughts on the remarks made by Paula Dean. First, let me quote a proverb by Mark Twain that was often used by my mother. “It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.” Now let me move on. In my opinion, I think that Paula Dean’s deepest fantasy was always to recreate a time when Black people were subservient to Whites. She wanted to have a shindig and invite all her racist friends to celebrate her achievements. She wanted to have the Theresa Harris’, the Claudia McNeils’, the Louise Beavers’ and the Hattie McDaniels’. She wanted to express herself by cultural regression instead of cultural progression. But what she fail to realize is that most Americans are trying to get pass this “Nigga Shit”. It is 2013 and within the past decade we have witnessed so much hurt, pain and tragedy. We have had major floods, hurricanes, terrorist attacks, murders, high unemployment, people losing homes, the death of Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Emanuel Steward, and so many, many loved ones. People of all races have volunteered to help storm victims, donated millions of dollars to relief funds, and offered prayers to God for mercy and help. Paula, we don’t need your food. We can make our own food. Just listen to James Brown’s, “Make It Funky.” We know how to cook fried chicken, mash potatoes, smothered steak, neck bones, candy yams, and turnip greens. But what we need from you is the sensitivity to understand that American is a melting pot of all nationality, race, creed, and color. We are trying to make the best of whatever we have. So my recommendation to you, Ms. Paula Dean, is the next time you put a pot on to boil, just add these following ingredients. 1 tsp of patience 2 tsp of kindness 3 tsp of humility 4 tsp of hope 5 tsp of charity 6 tsp of joy 7 tsp of peace 8 tsp of gentleness 9 tsp of self control 10 tsp of love
