For the second time this week, personnel from Civil Air Patrol’s California Wing were activated Friday evening by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center to assist San Diego County Sheriff’s Department in a search for an overdue aircraft originating from Thermal, Calif. According to incident commander, Capt. Shane Terpstra, the aircraft departed Jacqueline Cochran Regional Airport on Friday morning and did not return from a round-trip flight to the Borrego Springs area in northeast San Diego County. Capt Terpstra and his base staff worked with aircraft from Squadrons 5, 11 and 40 (Groups 3 & 7) who coordinated with a ground team from Squadron 144 (Group 8) and located the aircraft early this morning. Unfortunately, the pilot of the aircraft was deceased. While the outcome may not have been as it was earlier in the week, the tireless dedication of the professional volunteers from the California Wing allowed for a family to have closure. Thanks to all who participated in the search and who made themselves available. You prove every day why the members of the California Wing are the best of the best. Regards, Jon L. Stokes, Colonel, CAP Commander, California Wing
