For those about to take the first Humanities exam this may be the worst time to post this, but it also may be the best: God wants you to get some sleep. You are already well into the rigors of class work and the panic that comes with first exams in classes. But in the midst of the craziness God wants you to take care of yourself, and sleep is a big part of that. Studies show (this would be a good topic to research for a Composition paper next spring) that people in their late teens/early twenties are in a key developmental period and need sleep. Studies also suggest reasons why it is hard for you all to get up for those early morning classes. But it’s simple – you need sleep. As the wife of our prophet says, “You will know more for a test, feel better about life, do fewer stupid things, if you get enough sleep.” When you fill in your weekly schedule so you can see all that needs to be done, be sure to schedule in sleep. And don’t be afraid of a good 30-minute nap in the afternoon (just don’t let it become 3 hours). So reconsider that 2 am trip to Wal-Mart for shopping-cart races and maybe skip a few runs to Cookout, and get some well-deserved and needed sleep. The corollary to this is to take care of yourself in other ways, as well. Think about what you are eating. Get lots of exercise. Do physical activity that will help you deal with stress. Even with that big exam tomorrow – you will do better if you study well today, then go to bed at a reasonable hour. You might think cramming all night will give you an edge; it will put your brain in a fog and make you less able to remember. Today and every day, God wants you to take care of yourself.
