For those of you interested in Michael Sam coming to the Cowboys, but your eyes glaze over when sports terms are used, a business explanation of the situation: The Dallas Cowboys have three business units, two of which perform moderately well. The third is likely the worst in the industry. The best available employee on the market, and he was on the market because he could not dislodge more senior employees at his former place of work and was not significantly better than employees any other company had on their payroll, was better by orders of magnitude than any employee that particular Cowboys business unit has on the payroll. This was demonstrated by his ability to perform certain business functions that no one in the Cowboys operation were able to perform, not merely consistently, but at all. He has been brought into the organization in an internship capacity and on a probationary basis. His performance will be constantly monitored and reviewed. It is likely, but not a foregone conclusion, that he will be promoted to a full time employee, but we have no idea when that will happen if it does happen. This has nothing to do with the Dallas Cowboys being progressive or forward thinking. Rather, it is a result of some of the worst strategic and tactical business choices possible being made for over a decade. There is simply no business excuse NOT to hire Michael Sam. Basically, if they hadnt hired him, the shareholders could have sued the company for fiduciary malfeasance.
