For those of you who may have missed it, today is the 46th year since Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was murdered at a small hotel in Memphis, Tn. One may ask why he was murdered? Well, it was because his doctrine and practice of a nonviolent, loving response to violence was winning against the forces of hate. Light was penetrating darkness, and people love darkness rather than light, so someone tried to extinguish the light. Dr. Phils question comes to mind, How did that work for you? Lets take heart. The light wasnt extinguished when the religious establishment killed Jesus. It wasnt snuffed out when the religious (Christian) establishment of the South murdered Dr. King. (Though that establishment may not have pulled the trigger, it inspired the hate that prompted a man to pull the trigger.) And it wont be dimmed even a little when the religious (read: Christian) power structures in America today attempt to put it out by exercising manipulative power, censorship and threats against those who dont toe their doctrinal line. So lets be encouraged, for you are the light of the world! Shine on!!! (And a big, posthumous THANK YOU to Dr. King for demonstrating to us that the most important doctrine is love, and that self-sacrificial love does win.)
