For those parents who have expressed an interest in a Science Club for their children,Andrea Ingram and Tara Chodyka are pleased to inform you that the Young Naturalists Club Rocky Mountain will be starting up again for a new season. This club belongs to The Young Naturalists Club of British Columbia, which consists of special groups of children from across British Columbia who care about their world, from the smallest beetle in the grass to the mighty eagle soaring across the mountains. This club is open to all children ages 5 to 14 and their parents. Members of the Young Naturalist Club Rocky Mountain participate in Explorer Days once monthly. During these Explorer Days, the Young Naturalists and their parents learn about different aspects of nature from guest guides who are experts in the field and are local members of our community. Previous Explorer Days have included astronomy nights where the children were able to see Jupiter and it’s moons through the College of the Rockies telescopes. Club members have also gone on night time owl treks as well as had a close up view of a rehabilitated bald eagle and witnessed her release back into the wild. The young naturalists’ have build worm farms, owl nesting boxes and butterfly homes. Other Explorer Days have included identification of bird calls and animal tracks, falconry, avalanche science, geology, and archeology to name a few. Membership for the Young Naturalists Club of B.C. is $25 a year per family. In addition to the Explorer Days, members receive the NatureWILD magazine four times a year. Written by B.C.s best naturalists, this magazine contains articles about wild animals, fish, fossils, rocks and all sorts of other topics about nature. Also included in the magazine are games, puzzles and stories about and from young naturalists who are involved in exciting and challenging projects around the province. YNC members can also be recognized for their environmental action and community participation through the YNC Bronze, Silver and Gold Action Awards.
