For though I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it; - TopicsExpress

For though I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it; though I did regret it—for I see that that letter caused you sorrow, though only for a while—I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to the point of repentance; for you were made sorrowful according to the will of God, so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us. For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death. 2 Corinthians 7:8-10 (NASB) Paul is referring to his third letter which has been lost which he wrote to the Corinthians. Apparently, it had caused the people to begin to change. Paul had briefly felt remorse in causing them to have sorrow, but the resulting repentance made it worthwhile. He now felt that his letter had not hurt them, but had helped them. Godly sorrow for out sins that brings repentance that may lead to salvation. This repentance should lead to a change in behavior. Many people are sorry only for the effects of their sins or for being caught, this is worldly sorrow. Compare Peter’s remorse and repentance with Judas’ bitterness and act of suicide. Both disowned Christ. One repented and was restored to faith and service while the other took his own life. Godly sorrow causes people to turn toward God with repentance which brought salvation. The godly sorrow is never regretted – it is met with great joy upon repentance.
