For years Dr. Neil Clark Warren (he always refers to himself as Dr.--bad sign) has been hawking E-Harmony (as in electronic harmony), based on scientific principles of compatibility. The computer knows, you know. Yes, yes. Now he comes on the radio advertising something for people who dont like computerized matchmaking. There is a real-life matchmaker who looks at data and makes a decision. But the customers still do not know who is making that decision, at least not personally. This is insane. All this shows that society is breaking down. We are outsourcing the self (book title) and community to businesses using computers. If churches and neighborhood and jobs had some semblance of meaningful interaction, this would not be necessary. Yes, it can work for people. I do not dispute that. But think about the idea of automating of romance. Perhaps the State should take this all over and arrange for...everything. It would be efficient, of course. Dissenters and activists could be barred from marrying and complacent ones encouraged and instructed to have State-supervised children. It is so efficient and current.
