For years I have said we need to approve the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline so that we can build our energy infrastructure, increase our energy independence, and move our country closer to a true all of-the-above energy strategy. That’s why I voted to move the bill forward tonight in the Senate, even though it didn’t pass. However, I’m still disappointed in the process that got us to this point. Last week, I offered several common-sense amendments to this bill that would advance our goals for workable energy solutions, as did many of my colleagues. We’re on the first bill of the new Senate, and unfortunately this bill failed because many of my colleagues were frustrated that open debate on amendments was shut down due to partisan politics. Congress needs to work together, which includes robust debate, calling up amendments, and voting. If we move back to debating amendments, I hope mine will be considered. Only then will we be able to finally pass legislation approving the Keystone pipeline, and move on to bring larger energy priorities to the foreground.
