For years, the US Air Force has been flying a fleet of two experimental winged space planes, essentially unmanned miniature Space Shuttles about 30 feet long, that are launched by rockets into low earth orbit where they can remain indefinitely before being commanded to land. Designated the X-37B, little is known in the public sphere about its capabilities or its purposes, although launches and landings must be announced for safety reasons, and this is how we know that one is about to complete the third mission flown by this class of craft after being aloft 22 months despite initially being expected to do so for only 9 months.
