Forever 25 Medical shares Megans Story Megan’s Journey: An Inspirational Story of a Mother’s Love and Daughter’s Admirable Strength As Featured In Glancer Magazine, February 2013 By Janet Rueb Megan is my daughter, a twin sister, and a wonderful athlete who had a normal life until she had sports-related accident. It started out a sunny day in July. Megan was preparing for the second day of her summer league fast pitch softball tournament in Bolingbrook, Illinois. Her team, the Bolingbrook Rage, had just won their second game of the tournament and was headed for a double header to clinch the win for the day and move their way up the tournament ladder. The batter on the opposing team hit a pop-up ball to the outfield. Megan ran to catch it, but she collided with one of her teammates and fell face forward to the ground. It was the longest 30 seconds of my life when there was no movement on her part. I was about to call 911 when she whispered that she was “fine” and was carried off the field with an icepack on the “goose egg” above her eyebrow. Megan insisted on going back in to play, as the score was tied and she did not want to let down her team by sitting out. After the accident, Megan suffered from prolonged post-concussion symptoms, including confusion, nausea, dizziness and severe headaches. She went to the ER, where brain bleeding was ruled out. Her headaches were prolonged and severe, compromising her daily functioning, and were not improving even after multiple ER visits. It became clear that further neurological management was needed. I was lucky to meet Dr. Suwan, who specializes in headaches. Dr. Suwan worked around the clock and embraced my daughter as if she were her own child. The headaches were resistant to medication, and ultimately they responded only to medications along with injections. Megan started with Dr. Suwan with a pain level of 10. She ended with a pain level of zero. There were many ups and downs in between. Dr. Suwan was always available for us during the darkest moments. Megan sums it up best in her gratitude to Dr. Suwan: “It is times like this that I so appreciate you. You are unbelievable and such an absolute blessing to us. Thank you so much for your efforts. The world needs more Dr. Suwans in it... that is without a doubt!” Today, at 20, Megan is doing well. She is a beautiful and remarkable young woman who incidentally decided to become an EMT so that she can help others who are suffering. This journey was a life lesson. Things should not be taken for granted, because you never know what lies ahead of you. I am in awe of Megan’s faith, strength, endurance, the unwavering support of her friends and family, and the dedication of her wonderful doctor, Nesreen Suwan. In a crisis situation, I always revert back to my favorite saying, “Everything happens for a reason… just believe!” Dr Suwan is board certified in neurology and in pain and headache medicine. She specializes in the treatment of headaches, chronic pain and fibromyalgia. Dr. Suwan is a highly recognized and nationally known speaker in her field.
