Forget about family members. Ignore your bossom friends. Tonight while thinking about the graduation season, it took me back to our time in 2009. Prior to our graduation in December that year, we headed back to campus for clearance with Festu Kandie. Now, earlier in my life, I never knew him. I had never met him. He was a total stranger to me. So tonight, lets talk strangers. Those who have done exemplary things in our lives. Lets talk about that guy you met by default. The lady who lay beside you during a bank robbery. Or you were involved in a bad accident together. And she gave up her handkerchief to stop some bleeding. Or the one who helped you out when your car got stuck in the mud. That fellow who gave you drinking water when some fever overcame you in the hospital queue. You had to swallow some drug. You didnt even know their names. They didnt know you too but they helped you out. Back to Festu Kandie. This guy whom I met in a Technical drawing class. He helped me out in a math class. He didnt know me, but much stranger is how for three good months he accommodated two guys not from his tribe in his room. He fed them. Bought them books and when school closed, he paid their tickets back home. He hardly knew where they came from. Total strangers. During our clearance before graduation, I had lost an original receipt. I was sick. Typhoid. They sent me to the archives. I couldnt. I was too weak. Festu Kandie headed for the archives. Three hours later, and 3000 counterfoils later. He found it. No. 367. He did for me. For free. He is not my relative. He is not my childhood friend. When form fours of table 16 Tana hse held my short in form demanding all the meat, Erica Achiya, said NO! She insisted I was just a kid and I deserved food too. They did not listen. She gave me her supper. She didnt know me. I didnt know her. Such are the times you reflect and ask yourself, Have I been a good stranger to those who needed me? Think. Good night.
