Forgive and Forget By Albert Leonard I want to start out saying the phrase forgive and forget in not found in the bible. But when you read between the lines that is all you read. “ Forgive and forget”. I read in the book I read to my two young boys ages 4 and 5. The book is called Gods calling for kids by Phil Smouse it is a daily reading and it says on July 26. Forget the past the past is gone! Fill this good day with love and laughter. Forgive everything and treat everyone just like you would Jesus. Like I said the phrase forgive and forget in not found in the bible. But if you look at Matthew 18:21-22 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. If you really look at these verses you will read forgive and forget. Why do I say that it says to forgive and forget. Because I do not think you can forgive if you are still holding on to whatever in your heart. And to forgive seventy times seven means I have to forgive and forget. This is not an easy thing to do because we walk in the flesh and not in the Spirit of God. And that leaves the door wide open for Satan and he will put all kinds of lies in your mind and make it seem like God has put them there. Let me tell you this forgiveness means love. Look what Ephesians 4:32 says And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christs sake hath forgiven you. (and forgot the things you have done). Now read what it says in Hebrews 8:12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. If you really read these last two verses with an open heart and read them together as one you will see that God forgives and forgets all we do. The word of God tells us to have the same mind as Jesus. Read what it says in Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: also you read in 1 Peter 4:1-2 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. So again we are told to forgive and forget because to have the same mind and love that Jesus has means we have to suffer the same things as he did read the last part of 1 Peter 4:1 again Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; To forgive and forget may mean we have to suffer like Jesus did and do what is right. The bible which is Gods word never tells us things will be easy but it does say if you love Me you will keep My commandments. Other words God is saying if you love Me you will do as I do. And I tell you to forgive and forget what someone has done to you. Jesus tells us we must forgive to be forgiven read what it says in Matthew 6:14-15 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Again I believe this is saying you must forgive and forget. I truly believe that you can not forgive if you dont forget. I say this because if you dont forget you are holding on to it. And if you hold on to it to long it will turn into hate. I have been reading a book called overcoming your past and I want to share some of it with you on page 31 it says instead of forgiving ourselves and others for the mistakes and missteps made we become filled with bitterness and hatred. We talk about hating our lives. Ann Landers quotes this “Hate is like acid it does more damage to the vessel in which it is stored then to the object on which it is poured on. What it is saying is if you are at the point of hating it will do more damage to you then the person you are hating. Hate will stop you from doing a lot it will make you hate people all around you and they done nothing to you. Hate destroys your life and is also one of Satans ways to keep you out of the will of God. Many of us live tormented lives because we practice and hold onto and dont let go of the horrible things that has happen to us. So we are not able to forgive and forget. But let me tell you this. Forgiving and forgetting those who have hurt you abused or abandoned you is the most beautiful thing we can do for ourselves our friends our familys and those we love. As God says in Hebrews 8:12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. So we must do what Ephesians 4:32 tells us to do- And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christs sake hath forgiven you.( and remember their inquiries no more) so I will end with this stop trying to fix things and people let the word of God enter into your soul and meditate on the word of God day and night. Because this is what will change your heart so you can forgive and forget and you will have good success read what Joshua 1:8 says This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Heavenly Father I ask that you will show me how to forgive and forget all things that anyone had done to me. Lord change my heart so I can forgive other like you forgive me. Help and teach me not to try and fix things or people but let your word work in my heart to fix and change me. Help me to have the same mind as you have let your words work in me and through me so everyone can see that I am a child of Your thank you Father in Jesus name I pray Amen. Let me say one more thing if we say we are a child of God and we do this through Jesus Christ our lord and Savior then we say we are a christian. And Christianity is not just another religion it is the life of God abiding within and flowing through you. And your soul has been changed by the word of God. We are told to study and prove our self to God. Read what 2 Timothy 2:15 says Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. So if you are studying the word of God then you will find it is that we must forgive and forget what anyone has done to us and we will want to because we love God and Jesus and walk hand and hand with the Holy Spirit (Amen)
