Former Manila Representative Benny M. Abante on Wednesday said that “it is a sad fact that this Administration is a Johnny-came-lately to the energy crisis and appears to be at a loss as to how it plans to address the looming power crisis.” Abante, chairman of the Bayan Mamamayan Abante Movement, said that despite having been warned by experts about the looming power crisis, the government has been slow to provide concrete solutions to a problem “that could significantly affect our economic future.” “Eight months before the projected onslaught of the crisis, we have here a president giving belated orders to his energy czar to consult with various energy-related agencies and come up with solutions. Where have they been? Somebody is sleeping on the job, somewhere,” Abante said. “What is more disappointing,” Abante said, “is the inclination of the administration towards the acquisition of fossil-fuel-run power generators to avert the crisis, when the rest of the world has embarked on renewable and cleaner energy sources for the past several decades.” Abante pointed out that Congress enacted Republic Act 9513 or the Renewable Energy Act in 2008 to encourage investments in renewable energy. “No need to reinvent the wheel. We should make use of existing laws to address this problem and explore clean alternatives as,” according to the former lawmaker, “the country stands to benefit greatly from using renewable sources of energy because of its clean and sustainable character.” #BayanMamamayanABANTE manilastandardtoday/mobile/2014/09/04/admin-newbie-at-a-loss-over-looming-power-crisis
