Former Shiv Sena MLA Baburao Mane has filed a public interest - TopicsExpress

Former Shiv Sena MLA Baburao Mane has filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Bombay high court seeking direction that the government should stop spending money on advertisements that glorify its work ahead of the coming Assembly polls. Mr Mane’s contention is that the government has itself accepted that it does not have the money to do so. The PIL states that instead of spending money on advertisements, the government should do some constructive work for the poor people of the state like starting some scheme for them. According to the petitioner, he has come to know through reliable sources, the RTI and internet that different departments of government have already spent more than `3,000 crore on advertisements and are likely to spend an equal amount in the next 10 days. He has raised the question that when the government has already shown a budget deficit of `4,000 crore, where is it going to get the money to spend on such advertisements. He has also claimed that the financial condition of the state is so bad that it requires a loan to pay interest on another loan and despite this, is spending money on advertisements. Mr. Mane has requested the court that these advertisements be stopped. The court has directed the government to file an affidavit in reply and posted the matter for hearing on September 3.
