Forty-nine years ago today, President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act (VRA) into law. A cornerstone achievement of the civil rights movement, the VRA has helped ensure equal access to the vote. That is until last June, when the U.S. Supreme Court gutted a key part of the legislation, helping empower modern-day voter discrimination.
