Forty-seven citizens of Columbia County signed this petition to repeal the law against retailing “Ardent Spirits,” which was read before the Committee of State Funding on January 27, 1845. The citizens requested that the Committee members use their “best endeavors to have the Law against retailing Ardent Spirits repealed as [they] think it unfair and unjust that a person cannot sell such articles of traffic as he comes honestly by without paying such a heavy tax.” Ardent spirits are liquors that have been repeatedly distilled from fermented vegetables. This petition is from the Territorial and Early Statehood Records, 1821-1878 (Series S2153). This series contains correspondence; petitions; legislative acts; and resolutions and committee reports of the secretaries of state, the territorial and state governors, the general assembly, citizens of Florida, and officials of other states from 1821 to 1878. The collection has been organized into nine subseries, which maintains the original order of the items in the collection.
