Forty years ago today, Philipe Petit stretched a wire across the two towers of what was once the World Trade Center and proceeded to walk back and forth across it. Six years of planning culminated in an hour of balancing high above the Manhattan streets. I remember seeing this on the news as a kid and being in utter awe. Why did he do it? For the sheer joy and challenge of it. There was no media build up, no hype, he certainly wasnt sponsored by some an overly caffeinated, ultra-sweetened soft drink. Memories like that make me not only miss my youth, but a world long since gone...
