Forwarded from Adam: FUN & RULES Here is a great idea when you find yourself playing with, or teaching, “newbies”. This was taken from the monthly USAPA newsletter. I thought you all would enjoy it and I use this method sometimes when I am teaching. Ambidextrous Pickleball… Submitted by Hubert Townsend, USAPA Member This idea is addressed to the skilled players who dont want to play with the newbies and to the ambassadors teaching newbies: if these situations make playing a chore, do yourself a favor and learn to play with your opposite hand. This will strongly instill in you the fundamentals, since playing opposite handed seems so weird. And then, when you go back to playing with your dominate hand the fundamentals will be that much more instilled in you. This technique has improved my game while keeping me from being bored playing those that are not at the same level as myself. Try it. You will find it not only helps your game, but will make for a more fun time for your opponents/students. RULES. RULES. RULES. As most of you know, I try to stay UP on the rules so I have answers for you when you have questions. So, the other night when I found myself “UP in the middle of the night” I thought of a question someone had asked me about a Pickleball rule. Well, wanting to give the correct answer, I searched until I found it. In my search, I also found some interesting rules that I thought you all might like knowing or having some clarification on things that have come up recently. So below are several rules of interest. Knowing these rules, and all the rules of Pickleball, will help us become better players. RULE OF THE MONTH: New revision as of Jan. 15, 2014 Rule 12.N. Paddle Possession. A player must have possession of the paddle when it makes contact with the ball. The purpose of this rule is to prevent a player from throwing the paddle at a ball in an effort to hit the ball over the net. SERVING TIP OF THE MONTH: Rule 4.A. Serve Motion. The serve must be made with an underhand stroke so that contact with the ball is made below waist level (waist is defined as the navel level). Rules 4.A.1. Underhand Defined. The arm must be moving in an upward arc and the paddle head shall be below the wrist when it strikes the ball (paddle head is that part of the paddle excluding handle. The highest point of the paddle head cannot be above any part of line formed where the wrist joint bends). Judy’s suggestion: Lets all work on executing legal serves and helping others who are using incorrect serve techniques. Remember, if there is an illegal serve, the server looses their serve and play continues with the next server. NET INFORMATION AND RULES: Rule 12.J.5. When net systems have a horizontal bar that may include a center base: If the ball hits the horizontal bar or the center base before going over the net, it is a fault. If the ball goes over the net and then hits the horizontal bar, the ball is still in play. If the ball goes over the net and then hits center base or the ball gets caught between the net and the horizontal bar before touching the court, it is a let and must be replayed. QUESTION? What if the ball hits the outside net pole on it’s way out of bounds and the ball reflects off the pole and into the court of the opposing team? What is the ruling? 12.I. The Net Posts. The net posts are positioned out of bounds. If a ball strikes the net post or anything attached to the net post, it is a fault and a dead ball is declared. This rule does not include the net, the net cable, or rope between the net posts. INTERESTING FACT ABOUT SCORING: When the serving team’s score is even (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10) the player who was the first server in the game for that team will be in the right-side court when serving or receiving; when odd (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) that player will be in the left-side court when serving or receiving. IT IS A FAULT IF: The ball in play strikes a player or anything the player is wearing or carrying. There is one exception to this rule: if the ball strikes the player’s paddle hand below the wrist, the ball is still in play. If the ball strikes a player standing out of bounds before a fault has occurred, that player loses the rally. In doubles, if the serve strikes the receiver’s partner, it is a point for the serving team, providing it is not a let serve or a fault serve. This rule also includes balls that appear to be hit out of bounds: during play, if you catch the ball or try to stop it from heading out of bounds, you lose the rally. NON-VOLLEY ZONE / KITCHEN CLARIFICATION 9E. A player may step on the non-volley line or enter the non-volley zone at any time except when that player is volleying the ball. There is no violation if your partner returns the ball while you are standing in the non-volley zone. A player may enter the non-volley zone before or after returning any ball that bounces. 9F. A player may stay inside the non-volley zone to return balls that bounce. That is, there is no violation if a player does not exit the non-volley zone after hitting a ball that bounces. A FEW OTHER GOOD RULES TO KNOW: 12.A. Carry and Double Hits. Balls can unintentionally be hit twice or “carried”, but this must be during a continuous, single-direction stroke. If the stroke is not continuous, not single-direction, or if it is a definite second push, the hit is illegal. 12.B. Switching Hands. A paddle may be switched from hand to hand at any time. Two-handed shots are also legal. 12.C. Return Attempts. A completely missed return shot does not, by itself, constitute a dead ball. The ball remains in play until it bounces twice or until any other fault has occurred. Finally, let me encourage you to have fun, encourage one another, ask questions, learn the rules and help others learn the sport so more folks can have fun, encourage one another, learn the rules…… you get the drift. A friend of mine closes his emails with this message, I thought I’d pass it on to you. “Do you know what my favorite part of the game is? The opportunity to play!!” Here’s another good one from another good friend: “You don’t quit playing when you grow older, you grow older because you quit playing.” Have a blessed day and I’ll see you on the courts!
