Found myself with some time this afternoon and watched the news and one thing became very clear to me. The plain fact is that never before in our history have we stood in such desperate need of men and women of intelligence, imagination and courage. The challenge is there. I believe to rise to this challenge we must all believe in a free society, and be worthy of that free society. Every good man and woman strengthens society. Men and women of integrity, by their very existence, rekindle the belief that as a people we can live above the level of moral decay we seem to face. Our leaders in government must be dedicated to the performance of their roles. Dedication is a condition of the highest reaches of performance. Devotion and conviction insure desired outcomes. I do not expect or want politicians to come to full agreement on a list of goals. I expect them to set their priorities in matters affecting the common good through shared aims. Our continued greatness as a nation lies in these shared aims. One of the talking heads stated that we are uncertain of our shared aims as a nation. This statement, in my humble opinion, is dead wrong. To say we are confused or uncertain is a way of evading the difficult tasks before us. I do not believe we are in doubt about our shared aims as a great nation. We know what they are. We know that they are difficult. And we know that we have not achieved them. This is a great nation! Courageous men and women have spent lifetimes of effort, endurance and frustration in pursuit of these aims. Others have fought and died for them. It is time that our elected officials understand that the same measure of devotion is required of them today.
