Found out last night that my Mom was named Ilona, probably by her Mom, randomly picked based on a name around that day based on name days which is what is celebrated instead of birthdays, or at least thats how it used to be. Initially Klari, then finally Ilona. She was born at 7 months, as was my Dad, and Mom was not expected to live so they just chose a random name but when she lived she was always Lili. My Dads parents didnt expect a death, a detail he shared with me when this discussion started. This all came as I paused while we were watching a documentary on beliefs with an episode based on Nigerian religious roots. Good TV. Im a miracle kid born of miracle kids! I had the umbilical cord wrapped around my neck three times and was choking. My mom was also told she couldnt have anymore kids at 32 and then at 40 BAM! Also found out Dad never knew his grand moms. Also that his Mom died of lung cancer. She never smoked and they couldnt figure out why. He was, as all boys were, forced into the army. The day he got the letter from home about her Moms state was the day that he was told he didnt have to do exercises. Im guessing they knew of the letter but Dad felt it was a coincidence as they were pretty strict about things then. He read the letter and cried all day, and the next day he was told he didnt have to stay in the army so he got to go home and see his mom off before she died. Quite the story night.
