Founder, Executive in charge of Wordsmith, 2004 - present WORDSMITH Wordsmith description In 2004 after finishing two years of grueling medical training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Mark Vaughn, also known as the ‘stray dog’ on his first Facebook site began a small business start that he later called “Wordsmith”. It began really as an idea, that began with a young man…a child. Intrigued by his father’s writing, and the stories at bed time, and on television on such things as Children’s Workshop, and Saturday Morning Cartoons, among others…he started making books, and selling them to neighbors on Hunt Rd in Longwood, FL. In first grade there was no overhead, and the neighbors were quite kind. His picture books retailed for ten cents to a quarter. Now over 42 years later, after being in existence in an active and then dormant state, Wordsmith boast several novels, press stories, and children’s books, among other writings. It was intended to be a means to make income until work could be realized while waiting for licensing, and certification as a physician assistant. It became Wordsmith. Wordsmith itself, as a company began with presentation at the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce with a business card and brochure indicating what could be done, and what was intended. Several businesses were approached and work was done, but with the onset of physician assistant practice in Atlanta, GA with Dr. Ramone Sanchez, a neurologist, Wordsmith went quiet. It was not forgotten, cards kept, dreams still visited. There was copyright work done, of complimentary, or as a type of barter, but not unlike the first attempts of the young Wordsmith founder of knocking on doors with his ‘pad, illustrated creations of stories featuring favorites told in a another form. There was help along the way like from the author of “How To Make Money From Your Writing”, the how to guide that assisted with copyright start-up; and from folks such as ‘The Adsmith’ on Milledge Ave, in Athens, GA, who helped with basic encouragement , organization and inspiration for the business name. But like the name of his second child, it was in dispute whose idea it was to make wordsmith the company name. The first real break came with South Tampa news with the submission of an Article entitled “Save Sandy Creek” about an Audubon societies attempt to save a small scenic area in a quickly industrializing area near Orlando. It appeared in the South Tampa News, who sent information for how to submit to the Tampa Tribune. With encouragement from even the rival newspaper, the Tampa Bay Times, so a company began to grow into full fruition, and a dream realized. Currently several titles available from America Star Books,(AmeriKa, Of Home and Fields and Dreams, and Firelight) others are under consideration by Douglas-McIntyre, a Canadian book publisher, University Press, and others.. and the big dreams--ideas for production have been sent to such big names as the Celtic Woman, and Paramount Pictures, the home of Desilu Studios, the once famed business start of Lucile and Desi Arnez, home of “I Love Lucy, “Star Trek”, and “Bonanza”. Many works are in process of being developed including an upcoming feature known as the Pearls Trilogy with a story line that picks up were Herman Wouk’s novel’s The Winds of War, and War and Remembrance left off. Oyster Bay, the first title in the trilogy was briefly available on Google plus. It may be posted again in the future for a free peek at this upcoming trilogy now in the process of completion. A sequel is planned called The Oils of Arizona. Poetry and pictures have been developed by this upcoming theme and are posted on Wordsmith sites. What is the inspiration for Wordsmith? The inspiration for the ideas and dreams of Wordsmith comes from many places. From the writings of Tolkien, and CS Lewis, and Samuel Longhorn Clemens(Adventures; Innocents) ; From the stories and fairy tales found in such texts as Grimm’s Fairy Tales; In the classical writings of Poe, and Ambrose Bierce, and Charles Dickens; And from the Antiquities’ of old including such sacred texts as the Holy Bible, and the constitutions of the United States, and other nations around the world found in history.. But mostly from a simple place that was not to different from Bilbo and Frodo’s shire(Shire of my Youth), or Polly and Digory’s apartment; or Digorys country home where Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy came for a visit. Mom and Dad; family and simple quiet wisdom learned every day in a very ordinary place called home. Thats Wordsmith in a word. Family, and Home.
