Four Facebook Updates ... in plain English! :) ① PRIVACY BASICS 👍 Facebook just launched a new feature that provides tips and how-to guides for editing and taking control of your privacy. It has a very clean and simple design with three categories: i) What others see about you (your own posts, photos, profile, friend list, likes/comments, tags.), ii) How others interact with you (manage what people can post to your profile, unfriend, block, what to do if your account gets hacked!), and iii) What you see (ads and news feed). Get all your privacy concerns answered in a highly visual and intuitive way. Its well worth checking out and then sharing with your friends and fans! Go to: facebook/about/basics ② IMPROVED AD PREFERENCES 👍 Users can choose to opt out of having ads shown to them based on their activity on websites they visit (on desktop or mobile devices), and apps they use. (Keep in mind that advertisers never get to know your actual identity). Find out how to opt out in the US, Canada or Europe here: https://facebook/help/568137493302217 This handy section explains more about ads on Facebook and the control users have: https://facebook/about/ads/ Users can provide feedback to Facebook on every ad they see (click or tap the x or ∨ in the top right of any ad) - this has been in place for a while. However, ad preferences will soon be available in more countries, starting with Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland and the UK. Plus, previously if you opted out of certain ads on your laptop, for example, you might see the same ad later on your mobile. Now, when you opt out of ads (based on your activity outside Facebook), your preferences will prevail wherever you access Facebook. See the official announcement of this update here: https://facebook/business/news/international-facebook-ad-improvements ③ UPDATES TO TERMS and POLICIES 👍 Facebook is proposing updates to its terms, data policy, and cookies policy to reflect new features* coming soon. See the official announcement here and click through to read the various proposed updates if you have the time and inclination! newsroom.fb/news/2014/11/updating-our-terms-and-policies-helping-you-understand-how-facebook-works-and-how-to-control-your-information/ *New features include: i) Local Awareness where advertisers can target users based on location and movement; ii) a Buy button where users can make purchases without leaving Facebook + you may have seen Facebook using the Donate button for helping to stop Ebola ... perhaps the Donate button will be a future addition, too (both buttons also mean that Facebook will be collecting more financial data from users); iii) ad targeting based on activity outside Facebook such as websites you visit and apps you use (as mentioned in no. ② above). For the next 7 days, you’ll be able to submit comments and suggestions about Facebooks updates to the terms and policies here: https://facebook/help/contact/?id=541939745937896 Also, get to know how the family of Facebook companies and apps work together (including Instagram, WhatsApp, & Moves). Review each companys respective terms of service and privacy policies here: https://facebook/help/111814505650678 = = = = = Notable Nuggets on Privacy Updates: Nothing is changing with these updates—we help advertisers reach people with relevant ads without telling them who you are. Protecting people’s information and providing meaningful privacy controls are at the core of everything we do. All of our products are built in a privacy-protective way. We don’t share information with advertisers that tells them who a person is. We offer ways for people to opt out if they don’t want to see ads based on the apps and sites they use. (See no. ② above.) We look forward to continuing to build the trust people have in Facebook. 😊 = = = = = ④ PAGE TAGGING IN ADS 👍 When youre building an ad using Power Editor, Facebook has a new feature (indicated by a blue notification box) that lets you know you can now tag other Pages in your ad text. Hm. Not quite sure of the strategic purpose of this, but it could be useful! See this post on InsideFacebook: insidefacebook/2014/11/13/facebook-testing-page-tagging-feature-in-power-editor-ad-creation-flow/ Phew! I know this got a tad long ... if you made it this far, CONGRATS and thank you!! Please do share with your friends and fans to help educate more people about these updates. Thank you!! 🙏😘💋 [And, feel free to embed this post in a blog post on your own website, if you wish!] #FacebookNews #FacebookChanges #Privacy #FacebookPolicy
