Four kinds of dreams: (a) The discontinuous dreams we have while we are asleep or half asleep. Discontinuous because they change each time we sleep and even within the same sleep cycle. (b) The continuous dreams we have when we are not asleep. Continuous because they appear to continue from where we left them before sleeping. (c) The discontinuous dreams of thoughts, feelings, moods, perceptions, attitudes, views and beliefs. Discontinuous because they keep morphing, shifting and changing all day, everyday. (d) The continuous dream of personal consciousness - that which perceives the above three (including deep dreamless sleep) as happening to a separate, individual self. Continuous because it appears to be a constant backdrop to all these experiences. To wake up to the dream like nature of ALL these four kinds of states is the purpose of genuine spiritual practice and inquiry.
