Four things on earth are small, but they are exceedingly wise: the ants are a people not strong, yet they provide their food in the summer; the rock badgers are a people not mighty, yet they make their homes in the cliffs; the locusts have no king, yet all of them march in rank; the lizard you can take in your hands, yet it is in kings’ palaces. (Proverbs 30:24-28) Appearances may deceive us. Dont judge by outward appearances. Ants are small, yet they plan for the future and store up food for the days ahead. Rock badgers are small and weak, yet they can live in high inaccessible places. The locusts have no king, yet they function in an orderly way. The little lizard (some translations say spider) is easily caught, yet it has access to royal palaces. The idea here seems to be that men tend to evaluate others based on size, wealth, position, strength, looks, and abilities. God evaluates differently. These tiny creatures have their advantages based on who they are, not how they appear. A Christian is a man in Christ. In human eyes he may appear weak, unattractive, clumsy, inept, and unlearned. However, in Christ he is righteous, forgiven, clean, empowered, holy, a home for the Holy Spirit, a vessel of use for God, a light to shine in a dark world, and a visual representative of Christ. Dont judge yourself or others by how you appear. Evaluated yourself by what God says about you. It will make a world of difference. Prayer: Father, we know that in Christ we are royal children with supernatural abilities to love and forgive. Help us live out who we are, not what we may appear to others. Amen.
