Fourth Day of SCAD-HK Cinema Week, brought to you by the faculty: Thursday, 10 April (8PM, CR1): Pom Poko (1994) Have you ever met a bizarre-looking monk, a woman without a face, or a statue that could move? Perhaps somebody has been stealing vegetables from your garden? These may be tanuki, mythological creatures from Japanese folktales, trickster shape-shifters, who enjoy mischief, drumming on their bellies, and are known for their enormous…testicles. See how these legendary beasts struggle with real problems of the contemporary world in their attempt to defend their habitat from destruction by urban sprawl. Animation under the direction of Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday) and Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Princess Monoke). Professor Wasylak will give an introduction focusing on mythological themes that inspired this lesser-known Ghibli animation.
