Fox News; Nunn agrees with Rice and Cheney on needing tougher diplomacy. However, as far as cutting the military. The head of the CIA for Ronald Reagan, William Casey, designed a strategy to beat the Soviets based on imploding their economy by getting them to commit to overspending on their military. Casey accomplished his strategy by getting Reagan to agree to large overspending on our own military. The strategy was good for hurting the Soviets, however, the strategy if used long term, could do damage to ourselves. Nunn could be wrong, this is not an easy decision. However, Nunns personal belief is the budget needs to balance, military spending is not the only cuts that need to be made. Nunn would agree with Krautheimer as far as spending 10 percent of a balanced budget being spent on the military, from Nunns understanding, the U.S. is spending 40 percent, not 3 or 4 percent as Krautheimer claims, I suppose it depends who you get your facts from. Nunn believes a balanced budget is the main priority, and all aspects of government need to be cut, not just the military. The republicans will be picking up seats in the Senate, and can go after other aspects of the budget after the military has been balanced accordingly in the budget. Nunn believes the republicans might be better served by looking for changes or inefficiencies in military spending instead of arguing against cuts.
