Frameworks are useful tools for understanding and analyzing a program, which is crucial for developing sound M&E plans and implementation. Lets review the 3 common types of frameworks: Conceptual framework/“research” framework- this is a useful tool for identifying and illustrating a wide variety of factors and relationships that may affect the successful outcome of your program. In other words, a conceptual framework identifies and illustrates all of the salient relationships among all the factors impinging on the operations or targets of a program. These can be systems, organizations, population characteristics, or other features of the operational landscape that may help or hinder the program’s success; Strategic/Results framework: this is a useful tool for identifying and illustrating the focal points of a project for monitoring and evaluation, it illustrates the relationships between the incremental results of the key activities all the way up to the overall objective or goal of an intervention. Developing a framework focused on program results clarifies the points at which results can be monitored and evaluated. In addition, results frameworks clearly depict the causal relationships that the project design assumes will connect; Logical framework: This could be a diagram, statement or mathematical expression that identifies and illustrates the linear relationships flowing from program inputs, through processes, outputs, and leading to outcomes.
