Frankly CBC, this is just between you and me, but I thought - TopicsExpress

Frankly CBC, this is just between you and me, but I thought Harpers media lines about the four PTSD suicides were weak. He basically said, We do have help available. Everyone who needs help should ask for that help and that help will be there. They didnt sound like he cared enough, although I know Harper well enough to know that he does care, but he didnt sound like it. Tomorrow to make up for Harper should say something along these lines, again between you and me for the obvious reason. PSTD Suicide Media Lines (Prime Minister Harper) Last night I spoke with Minister of Defence Nicholson and the Minister of Veterans Affairs Julian Fantino and asked them to co-operate and establish a unified action plan between the two Ministries to make whatever improvements they feel are necessary to deal with this problem. My main concerns is that no Canadian who has served with Canadas armed forces in the past to those who are serving now do not fall through the cracks and fail to find the help they need. Our government is working to have a unified monitoring program for Canadas Veterans and Canadians who are currently on active service and especially for those who are in transition back to civilian life so that no matter when a Canadian needs help he or she will know that help is available. I also want a more proactive program for those who provide health care and social services so they can be better trained to recognized those at risk PTSD and a program put in place to give help to those who may be at risk of PTSD before they suffer from its full effects. I have asked Minister Nicholson to work with the heads of Canadas armed services to educate Canadas Officer Corps on how to recognize those who may be at risk of PSTD and to establish programs within Canadas Armed forces to offer assistance to anyone who wishes it. This new program will recognize that active service does have unique stressors which civilian Canadians dont understand and help those on active Service deal with those stressors while they are happening. This new program of assistance will be strictly voluntary but it will also be universally available. Lastly I want the Canadian Government to work with Provincial Health Services to develop a program to assist families of those who suffer from PTSD. In Canada health services are delivered by the Provinces but I feel confident that we can all work together to put in a universal framework of assistance for all families in Canada no matter where they live. Canadian families need to know what resources the federal government offers and what resources the Provinces have available and both are working in concert and cooperating together to assist the entire family and family knows its problems are important to all levels of government. The family outreach program is especially important because our research into PTSD that those who suffer from it recover much faster if their families can receive the assistance they need at the same time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As an aside, The Province of Ontario has an excellent program working within the community to ensure no one who needs medical assistance goes without it. They work very hard and it is evident that they do care. Ontario is extremely proactive in that it goes to those who may need help using both community and provincial health employees working as one team to provide their services. Ontario doesnt wait for those who need help to come to them, the do all they can to find those who need help. You could do worse in copying how Ontario does it for cases where people are reluctant to seek help for such things as PSTD. I read an article in the paper on Saturday on how they make sure seniors dont fall through the cracks. I was impressed.
