Franz Ferdinand, Mogwai and Frightened Rabbit have been announced as headliners at an upcoming rally for Scotland’s independence campaign. The three bands will join Eddi Reader, comedienne Elaine C Smith and McIntosh Ross, a team-up by Deacon Blue’s Lorraine McIntosh and Ricky Ross, at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall on 14 September. Dubbed A Night For Scotland, the showcase is intended to help the country’s yes supporters “prepare to move up another gear” before the 18 September referendum, promoter Tommy Sheppard told The Scotsman newspaper. Tickets for the show cost £15 and go on sale today. In a statement, Mogwai called the referendum a “once in a lifetime opportunity” for Scottish people “to take our place on the global stage and show the world what we are made of”. Frightened Rabbit said the concert is a way to “reach out” to undecided voters with music. “We are a nation of such great wealth and talent in all areas that we’ve not only got what it takes, but we deserve to be in the driving seat of our own destiny. We can do a better job,” they wrote. By formally staking their support for the yes campaign, Mogwai, Franz Ferdinand and the other performers have closed ranks with luminaries like Irvine Welsh, Sean Connery, and Belle and Sebastian’s Stuart Murdoch. But those against independence could stage their own star-studded mega-bash, especially if they invited some of their English friends: Susan Boyle, Paul McCartney and David Bowie have all called on Scottish people to choose to remain in the United Kingdom.
