Fraternity awards $5k in scholarships to young men SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Saturday in Springfield, a fraternity of African American men awarded $5,000 in scholarships to young people. The Springfield Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity held their 6th annual oratorical contest inside St. John’s Congregational Church. Eight young men from western Massachusetts delivered an original speech answering the question, what can be done to positively influence the plight of Black and Latino males. The young scholarship winners will put the money toward their college expenses. Ronn Johnson, Alpha Phi Alpha’s Director of Education told 22New “And then when our Governor came out and asked the same question and posed it to the people of our Commonwealth. Then it really became something that resonated with them and they gravitated to the topic in a very significant way.” These young men prepared for today with the help of a mentor, and some lessons of giving speeches. The Springfield Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha was first chartered in 1963.
