Free Public Community Water Forums on Tuesday October 14th - Please attend! Did you know that a recent report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) declared Southwest Florida a “hotspot” for recent wetlands loss? Vital to the health of waterways and communities that are downstream, wetlands trap floodwaters, recharge groundwater supplies, remove pollution, and provide fish and wildlife habitat. Wetlands are also economic drivers because of their key role in fishing, hunting, agriculture and recreation. You are invited to a free important public forums on the role of wetlands in protecting downstream waters being held on Tuesday, Oct. 14. From 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., a Protecting Wetlands to Save Naples Bay brown bag lunch-time lecture will be held at the Conservancy Nature Center, 1495 Smith Preserve Way in Naples. From 6:30-8pm, a forum titled, “Protecting Wetlands to Save the Caloosahatchee” will be held from 6:30 - 8 p.m. at Harborside Convention Center, 1375 Monroe St. in the Fort Myers River District. Please see the attached flyers. Sponsored by numerous environmental and civic organizations, the event features expert speakers from NOAA, along with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and Florida Gulf Coast University on the importance of wetlands, loss of wetlands and how their protection is key to saving our coastal waters. During the forum, citizens will also learn how they can directly help to restore our rivers, bays and beaches - the lifeblood of Southwest Florida’s economy and environment.
