Freedom, now illegal in New Mexico If you work in New Mexico, you are now a slave. There really is no other way to describe what is currently happening in New Mexico. All pretense of freedom and liberty has been stripped away and now people in New Mexico are slaves to the government. What has happened? The New Mexico Supreme Court has ruled that a Christian photographer has no right to refuse to photograph a gay "commitment" ceremony. This case began in 2006, when a lesbian couple approached Elaine Huguenin about photographing their "commitment" ceremony. Because Huguenin is a devout Christian, she politely declined. The lesbian couple then complained to state officials in New Mexico who then fined Huguenin $7000 for refusing to accommodate the lesbians. The case went to court and in a stunning ruling, the New Mexico Supreme Court has ruled that the photographers could not decline to participate in the wedding, even though they held sincere religious beliefs holding that marriage was between one man and one woman. This is a ruling that is so stunning it is unbelievable. What the New Mexico Supreme Court has said is that your labor is not your own. If someone comes along and wants you to perform a service, you pretty much have no choice. You cannot object if you find it morally objectionable. One of the fundamental freedoms that comes with being a part of a free society is the right to decide who you are going to work for. This applies in situations where you accept employment and it also applies to situations where someone owns their own business. Tyrants and dictatorships tell people what they will do and who they will do it with. This is not even a gay rights issue. This is an issue of freedom. There are a lot of photographers in New Mexico. There is absolutely no reason why this couple could not have gone to another photographer. The free market will deal with the Huguenins. If their behavior is bad, the free market will punish them. If enough people dislike their behavior, the free market will force them to change or force them out of business. The left always likes to preach to everyone about "tolerance." This is just another example of how tolerance always applies to the left but never to conservatives. Hopefully this case will be appealed to the United States Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court will do something to correct this problem. Meanwhile, if you work in New Mexico, your labor is not your own. You are a slave to the state and anyone the state tells you that you will work for. America may still be the land of the free, except in New Mexico.
