Friday Oct. 17th 2014 A 3-month-old kitten was rescued this afternoon from a Riverside location that proved to be a challenge for animal control officers. But Riverside County Animal Services officers teamed up and used their “MacGyver”-like heads to save the domestic, short-haired, black-and-white feline. The kitten had actually fallen from a wood beam covering a Dumpster-enclosure at a trade school at 1860 University Ave. The kitten made a hole-in-one drop inside a square, metal pole. The pole extended about 6 feet from the ground, but was actually more than 10 feet in depth, including its length extending into the ground. The officers have control sticks that feature a loop at the end, but the sticks are only about 6 feet long. So they strapped two together and made a makeshift, giant-size control stick. That worked. At about 3:30 p.m., the kitten was looped and pulled up from the bottom of its odd entrapment by Animal Services Lt. Chris Mayer. A security guard had called Riverside County Animal Services to respond to the cat after several people had reported hearing a repetitious meowing throughout the day. The cat appears to be healthy and relatively friendly. It will be kept at the Western Riverside County/City Animal Shelter in Jurupa Valley until an owner comes to claim their pet. If no one comes to the shelter, the kitten will be made available for adoption. The kitten was believed to have fallen straight into the hole of the pipe/pole because a security guard at the property told officers that he had seen the animal atop the wood beams earlier in the day.
