ESTHER—A COURAGEOUS QUEEN 14 Queen Esther displayed great faith and courage when a genocide plot hatched by wicked Haman imperiled the Jews throughout the Persian Empire in the fifth century B.C.E. No wonder they mourned and fasted and undoubtedly prayed with all their heart! (Esther 4:1-3) Queen Esther was greatly distressed. Her cousin Mordecai sent her a copy of the law authorizing the massacre and commanded her to appear before the king to implore favor for her fellow Jews. But anyone going in to the king when not summoned was put to death.—Esther 4:4-11. 15 Yet, Mordecai told Esther: ‘If you are silent, deliverance will come from another place. But who knows whether it is for a time like this that you attained royal dignity?’ Esther urged Mordecai to gather the Jews in Shushan and fast in her behalf. “I shall fast likewise,” she said, “and upon that I shall come in to the king, which is not according to the law; and in case I must perish, I must perish.” (Esther 4:12-17) Esther acted courageously, and the book bearing her name shows that God delivered his people. In our day, anointed Christians and their dedicated associates display similar courage under trial—and the “Hearer of prayer” is always on their side.—Read Psalm 65:2; 118:6. Esther 4:1-3 And Mor´de·cai himself got knowledge of everything that had been done; and Mor´de·cai proceeded to rip his garments apart and put on sackcloth and ashes and go out into the middle of the city and cry out with a loud and bitter outcry. 2 Finally he came as far as in front of the king’s gate, for no one was to come into the king’s gate in clothing of sackcloth. 3 And in all the different jurisdictional districts, wherever the king’s word and his law were reaching, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting and weeping and wailing. Sackcloth and ashes themselves came to be spread out as a couch for many. Esther 4:4-11 And Esther’s young women and her eunuchs began to come in and tell her. And the queen was very much pained. Then she sent garments to clothe Mor´de·cai and to remove his sackcloth off him. And he did not accept [them]. 5 At this Esther called Ha´thach, one of the king’s eunuchs, whom he had made to attend upon her, and she proceeded to give him a command concerning Mor´de·cai, to know what this meant and what this was all about. 6 So Ha´thach went out to Mor´de·cai into the public square of the city that was before the king’s gate. 7 Then Mor´de·cai told him about all the things that had befallen him and the exact statement of the money that Ha´man had said to pay to the king’s treasury against the Jews, to destroy them. 8 And a copy of the writing of the law that had been given in Shu´shan to have them annihilated he gave him to show Esther and to tell her and to lay the command upon her to come in to the king and implore favor of him and make request directly before him for her own people. 9 Ha´thach now came in and told Esther Mor´de·cai’s words. 10 Then Esther said to Ha´thach and commanded him concerning Mor´de·cai: 11 “All the king’s servants and the people of the king’s jurisdictional districts are aware that, as regards any man or woman that comes in to the king at the inner courtyard who is not called, his one law is to have [him] put to death; only in case the king holds out to him the golden scepter, he will also certainly stay alive. As for me, I have not been called to come in to the king now for thirty days.” Esther 4:12-17 And they proceeded to tell Mor´de·cai the words of Esther. 13 Then Mor´de·cai said to reply to Esther: “Do not imagine within your own soul that the king’s household will escape any more than all the other Jews. 14 For if you are altogether silent at this time, relief and deliverance themselves will stand up for the Jews from another place; but as for you and your father’s house, YOU people will perish. And who is there knowing whether it is for a time like this that you have attained to royal dignity?” 15 Accordingly Esther said to reply to Mor´de·cai: 16 “Go, gather all the Jews that are to be found in Shu´shan and fast in my behalf and neither eat nor drink for three days, night and day. I too with my young women, I shall fast likewise, and upon that I shall come in to the king, which is not according to the law; and in case I must perish, I must perish.” 17 At this Mor´de·cai passed along and proceeded to do according to all that Esther had laid in command upon him.Psalm 65:2 O Hearer of prayer, even to you people of all flesh will come.Psalm 118:6 Jehovah is on my side; I shall not fear. LA VALIENTE REINA ESTER 14 En el siglo V a.e.c., la reina Ester actuó con gran fe y arrojo ante una grave amenaza: un hombre perverso llamado Hamán ideó un complot para exterminar a los judíos que vivían en el Imperio persa. Como era lógico, estos comenzaron a lamentarse y a ayunar, y de seguro se entregaron de toda alma a la oración (Est. 4:1-3). Ester estaba muy angustiada. Su primo Mardoqueo le había enviado copia de la ley que autorizaba la masacre y le encargó que intercediera ante el rey por sus hermanos judíos. No obstante, quien se presentara ante el rey sin ser llamado era condenado a muerte (Est. 4:4-11). 15 Aun así, Mardoqueo le dijo a Ester en pocas palabras: “Si te quedas callada, la liberación vendrá de otro lugar. Pero ¿quién sabe si has alcanzado la dignidad real precisamente para un momento como este?”. En respuesta, Ester le pidió que reuniera a los judíos en Susa para que ayunaran por ella. “Yo también [...] ayunaré igualmente —dijo ella—, y tras eso entraré a donde el rey, lo cual no es conforme a la ley; y en caso de que tenga que perecer, tendré que perecer.” (Est. 4:12-17.) La reina se armó de valor, y el libro que lleva su nombre explica cómo libró Dios a su pueblo. En nuestros días, los cristianos ungidos y sus diligentes compañeros manifiestan la misma entereza frente a las pruebas. Además, el “Oidor de la oración” siempre está de su lado (léanse Salmo 65:2 y 118:6). Ester 4:1-3 Y Mardoqueo mismo llegó a saber de todo lo que se había hecho; y Mardoqueo procedió a rasgar sus prendas de vestir, y a ponerse saco y ceniza, y a salir en medio de la ciudad y clamar con un fuerte y amargo clamor. 2 Finalmente llegó hasta enfrente de la puerta del rey, porque nadie había de entrar dentro de la puerta del rey en ropa de tela de saco. 3 Y en todos los diferentes distritos jurisdiccionales, adondequiera que llegaba la palabra del rey y su ley, había gran duelo entre los judíos, y ayuno y llanto y plañido. Saco y ceniza mismos se tendieron como lecho para muchos. Ester 4:4-11 Y las jóvenes de Ester y sus eunucos empezaron a entrar y referírselo. Y la reina quedó muy adolorida. Entonces envió prendas de vestir para vestir a Mardoqueo y para quitar su saco de sobre él. Y él no [las] aceptó. 5 Ante esto, Ester llamó a Hatac, uno de los eunucos del rey, a quien este había puesto para atenderla, y procedió a darle un mandato respecto a Mardoqueo, para saber lo que esto significaba y de qué se trataba todo esto. 6 De manera que Hatac salió a donde Mardoqueo, a la plaza pública de la ciudad que estaba delante de la puerta del rey. 7 Entonces Mardoqueo le informó acerca de todas las cosas que le habían acaecido y la declaración exacta del dinero que Hamán había dicho que se pagara a la tesorería del rey en contra de los judíos, para destruirlos. 8 Y le dio una copia del escrito de la ley que se había dado en Susa para que se los aniquilara, a fin de que se la mostrara a Ester y le informara y le diera el mandato de entrar a donde el rey y suplicar favor de él y presentar solicitud directamente delante de él por el propio pueblo de ella. 9 Hatac ahora entró y refirió a Ester las palabras de Mardoqueo. 10 Entonces Ester dijo a Hatac y le mandó respecto de Mardoqueo: 11 “Todos los siervos del rey y el pueblo de los distritos jurisdiccionales del rey están enterados de que, en cuanto a cualquier hombre o mujer que entre a donde el rey en el patio interior sin ser llamado, su única ley es la de darle muerte; solo en caso de que el rey le extienda el cetro de oro, entonces ciertamente quedará vivo. En cuanto a mí, no se me ha llamado para entrar a donde el rey desde hace ya treinta días”. Ester 4:12-17 Y procedieron a informar a Mardoqueo las palabras de Ester. 13 Entonces Mardoqueo dijo que respondieran a Ester: “No te imagines dentro de tu propia alma que la casa del rey escapará más que todos los demás judíos. 14 Porque si estás callada por completo en este tiempo, alivio y liberación mismos se levantarán para los judíos de algún otro lugar; pero en cuanto a ti y la casa de tu padre, ustedes perecerán. Y ¿quién hay que sepa si has alcanzado la dignidad real para un tiempo como este?”. 15 Por consiguiente, Ester dijo que se respondiera a Mardoqueo: 16 “Ve, reúne a todos los judíos que se hallan en Susa, y ayunen por mí, y ni coman ni beban por tres días, noche y día. Yo también, con mis jóvenes, ayunaré igualmente, y tras eso entraré a donde el rey, lo cual no es conforme a la ley; y en caso de que tenga que perecer, tendré que perecer”. 17 Ante esto, Mardoqueo pasó adelante y procedió a hacer todo lo que Ester le había dado el mandato de hacer. Salmo 65:2 Oh Oidor de la oración, aun a ti vendrá gente de toda carne.Salmo 118:6 Jehová está de mi parte; no temeré. ¿Qué puede hacerme el hombre terrestre?
