Friday morning brings the answer to our Trivia Tuesday question. Florida Southern College can trace its roots back to Orlando, with a move to Leesburg in 1886. The institution later moved to Sutherland due to freezes, complications in the citrus industry, and general economic difficulties. Time here brought challenges, but also growth and promise for a bright future. A fire on January 29, 1921, though, required the College to find a new home. We moved to Clearwater Beach, temporarily residing in a hotel owned by College Trustee E. T. Roux. Offers were received from Lakeland, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Fort Pierce, and Jacksonville to serve as our new home, but Lakeland was ultimately selected as the most promising location. A severe storm in 1921 and another fire in 1922 prompted the College to make its final move to the shores of Lake Hollingsworth. We have been here since that time, educating generations of students who have called this special place home, and welcoming alumni back to reminisce with friends about the time they spent at this beloved institution.
