Friday morning while running a horticulture group with a few of the individuals that I provide services for I worked with an individual who requires a lot of physical assistance to carry out tasks. Just minutes earlier in frustration of the fact that he was struggling with performing the task of pouring water into the soil (a task that he does occasionally without physical assistance), my thinking went along the lines of: “why do I even bother?” “He’s not going to get it right” (don’t judge me). As we worked on spraying the leaves with a water spray bottle, I thought about the fact that this was something that I had never seen him do without physical assistance, nevertheless I gave him the opportunity to perform the task and prove me wrong. As I prompted him to pull the lever of the spray, to my surprise he did just that. With a quick pull of his fingers against the lever, the spray released a mist of water on the dry leaves of the plant. I couldn’t believe it. Stunned momentarily, he pulled back 2 more times and sprayed the leaves. Overwhelmed with emotion, I responded with a burst of praise and excitement for what he had just accomplished. I was so overjoyed. God dropped into my spirit that there are so many times that we like my student just don’t get it right. And often, others hold the same frustrated viewpoint that I earlier had (“why bother with people who seem to never get it right”). However, God continues to give us opportunities at “getting it right” and furthermore rejoices exuberantly when we “get it right”. He delights in those moments in which we do right.
