Friday song of the day: These Days by Nico. Nico was a German model and actress who began a singing career in 1963, and soon became associated with Andy Warhol. Warhol appended her to The Velvet Underground, where she performed some songs with the band in the Warhol stage show, The Exploding Plastic Inevitable. She sang three songs (and provided backing vocals on another) on the first Velvets album The Velvet Underground and Nico. The association with the Velvet Underground ended soon after. In 1967, she recorded her first album, Chelsea Girl, so named because of her starring role in the previous years Warhol film Chelsea Girls. The first album was composed mainly of cover tunes done in a traditional folk/chamber music style. Her later music went in another direction, and heavily influenced the later goth genre. With her thick accent and deadpan delivery, Nicos singing is an acquired taste. She often sings off-key due to her being deaf in one ear, but that is part of the musics charm. After battling a heroin addiction for 15 years, Nico died following a bicycle accident in Ibiza. youtube/watch?v=0_z_UEuEMAo Tomorrow: Modern medicine falls short of your complaint.
