Friends, As a rule I do not respond to personal attacks. However, my opponent has chosen to make negative remarks in the media with regard to my son. Since I believe morally and ethically that family members should never become the target of such campaign attacks, I have agreed to publish my sons response below. Sincerely, Ted Yoho Open letter to Candidate Jake Rush July 12, 2014 Dear Mr. Rush, Ive been a popular topic for you since you began your campaign, and since you claim to be a straight shooter, I thought you would appreciate a straight response to your claims. You have said publicly, in print and in radio advertisements that my father, Congressman Ted Yoho, helped land me a cushy job in Washington. As a sworn officer of the Court, one would have thought that you would have done your due diligence to get the facts straight. However, I see that is not the case and as a student of legal studies, I have decided to help you. I happened to sit next to Congressman Robert Pittenger, who represents North Carolinas 9th District, on a train headed from Washington to Virginia early last year. For the two hour ride we discussed a variety of issues including politics, school, and Congress. As we departed the train, he offered me an unpaid internship in his office following my graduation. Like any soon to be graduate, I jumped at the chance to work for a member of Congress in the field of my interest. Never once did my father make a call, work out a deal, or assist me in obtaining my unpaid internship. This six week unpaid internship in Washington was obtained through my efforts alone, and to suggest that the job was cushy would be the overstatement of the year. For 6 weeks, I slept on my parents tiny D.C. apartment couch. I was in the office at 8am every morning, sorted hundreds of pieces of mail, listened to angry constituents on the phone, fetched coffee, worked on research projects for legislative staff and handled an assortment of administrative duties. I left the office late each night and tried my best to learn as much as I could. Cushy is not a word that I would use to describe my experience in Washington. You have also made public my run-ins with the law. As a college student, I have made some poor choices that have resulted in some misdemeanors. However, I have taken full responsibility for them. No attempt has been made to cover up my record, unlike your efforts to scrub your embarrassing past, as quoted by the Gainesville Sun on April 2, 2014 - Rush admits deleting web content regarding role-playing past. You have said, “My campaign will be talking exclusively about the issues, especially about the economy, jobs, and the future of our country. Once we are done, we are not going to continue to talk about these silly side show issues that always seem to follow Yoho.” Sir, the only silly side show that is following Ted Yoho, is you. I have found as a student of the law, and as the son of a Congressman, that men only resort to tearing apart another mans character when they have no merits of their own. Your endless character attacks against my father say little about him, but volumes about you. North Central Florida deserves better. Tyler Yoho
