Friends, Followers & Family 18th and 19th was mainly made up of flying and a new city and country. For the majority of the 18th we basically mooched about spending time with family and spending more time at the mall until our 10pm flight to Dubai. While we were at the mall we stopped off at Spur again where once again they served up an awesome steak. We also stopped off at Wakaberry, a make your own Ice Cream parlour where you pay by the weight. They had some interesting flavours including peanut butter and cake mixture which not only had me intrigued but in a sugar coma in no time. After what seemed like a lifetime of flying we arrived in Dubai at around 8am. We caught the metro (gold class) to the nearest stop by our hotel, the Mall of Emirates Ibis hotel. The hotel was a good 45min in the train and when we got to the mall we struggled a little initially to work out its location. When we did we quickly realised how harsh the desert sun was. I think I almost melted on the short walk to our hotel and we insisted on paying extra to check in 3hours early by paying an extra 300DHS. It wasnt long after checking in that I showered and got into bed for a 3 hour power nap after little or no sleep on the flight in. I swear we were crammed onto the Johannesburg to Dubai flight like tinned sardines. Once I finally awoke we made our way back to the Mall of Emirates and back to the metro where we made our way to the Gold Souk at Deira Palms. When exiting the metro we were quickly struck by the foul stench of the local fish market ripe from the heat. I think I almost dry wretched and was quite eager to make my way indoors away from the uncomfortable heat and odour. Once in doors I was quickly reminded of the Thailand night markets left right and centre as I was once again harassed by merchants that wanted me to buy their goods. The gold & silver merchants tried desperately to find a silver ring that tickled my fancy and fit my fat European fingers that were horribly swollen from the intense heat. It wasnt long before we left the market with a few cheap magnets to feed the hungry salesmans desire to sell. Though slightly disappointed with the grandiose gold souk we were soon captivated with the bright lights and sales tags of the Dubai Mall where Burj Khalifa is located (the tallest building in the world). By this point we were still quite tired and a little bit jaded about the prospect of more shopping in a mall. So we stopped at the food court which had every fast food chain from around the world imaginable. In the end we thought why not keep our own local delicacy Burger Fuel (from New Zealand) alive and kicking by doing our part buying a burger and chips. After dinner we were fortunate enough to see the musical fountains which house the Burj Khalifa in the background. By the time we finished up at the mall it would have been close to 10pm (with most of the malls open until midnight-1am) we decided to call it a night and pop on the metro back to the hotel. Naki boy takes on the world.
