Friends: Here it is, Whitney - directed by the brilliant Angela Bassett! And here she is: the radiant Yaya DaCosta, as Whitney. I am so excited! Years ago, what struck me first about Yaya was her profoundly open heart and total raw instinct in balance with a complete dedication to her craft. Happily we reconnected as she prepared herself to work with Bassett, and there it was again - that intuition and expressive depth. I got chills witnessing the speaking voice and whole body range, dimension, power and nuance she brings to the arc of the script. Yaya truly connected herself to the spine of Houston. In collaboration with her director who knows a thing or two about creating a singers portrait (if you are unaware, one of Bassetts unforgettable performances was as Tina Turner!),Yaya delivers a performance that I am sure will move you. This is a do not miss! Debora Cox beautifully provides Whitneys singing voice; the way Yaya connects to song and channels as she acts is nothing short of astonishing. I will be watching her on Lifetime, January 17th!
