Friends: I am so incredibly moved by so many of you for extending to me and my family your kindness and generosity. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to those of you who came to the funeral and to Shiva, and to those of you who literally flooded my mailbox, my email box, my Facebook page, and my phone with messages, letters, texts, and warm thoughts. It buoyed me, truly. It has been the most devastating two weeks of my life, but the moments of beauty have not been lost on me -- I am eternally grateful to you for those. I imagine that the hard part starts now, but it will be made easier by two things: 1) by knowing how lucky I am to be supported by so many wonderful people; and 2) by knowing that Grandma would have wanted me to continue to live and love. I said this in my eulogy yesterday: In 2009, I took Grandma to Storycorps to record her life story, which is now documented forever in the Library of Congress. At one point in the interview, I asked her how she learned to deal with all the loss she had experienced and still have such a wonderful disposition. She said, “Life is full of ups and downs and you learn – you learn from everything. And if you’re a smart person you see the ups rather than the downs. You look at life as being wonderful, no matter what. You deal with the crises… You say you’re lucky. You had these people in your life, they were wonderful, you’re a better person for it, you’re left with many happy memories. Essentially, instead of saying I’ve lost so many people, I say I’ve had so many people. And I think of life as being good.” I will hold onto that.
