Friends: I have a friend who has recently become vegan, and some - TopicsExpress

Friends: I have a friend who has recently become vegan, and some of her family are resistant to it and are telling her its tantamount to joining a cult. She asked how I would respond to this. One logical response for me would be to point out that cults brainwash people to believe precepts; whereas, vegans are not brainwashed by anyone. On the contrary, the decision to become vegan is an individual decision that one usually makes after s/he has examined facts, independent of any other one persons influence (e.g., when I became vegan 12 years ago, I did not know any other vegans; when I became vegetarian 20 years ago, I did not know any other vegetarians. It was a conscious and deliberate decision, not fueled or motivated by any other one person or group of people). I know there are lots of other reasons that veganism cant legitimately be compared to a cult, but what would be a good succinct response to someone who makes this accusation?
