Friends, we are finally able to go public with a very important announcement: The Dhokais are moving to the burbs! ....Of Washington, D.C.!!!!! The universe has somehow rearranged itself in such a way that it makes sense for our family to relocate in June. Andy can actually do his job better from DC (he’s in government relations, after all, and eager to get back to the Hill in person). My boss is graciously allowing me a transition period during which I will work from DC until we are settled. So yes, you heard that right: we are leaving Chicago in two months! I’ve been in Chicago for twenty years. Half my life. It’s been the best of times and the worst of times. It’s a great freakin’ city and I’m going to miss so much about it, but mostly the fact that I run into my friends everywhere I go, as if it’s a tiny town somehow (although I see my theatre friends all the time on TV anyway). What I will miss: Wrigley Field and “dibs” and the giddiness of the first nice day after winter and our annual yard sale with Laura & Sid and the music and the amazing theatre and the food, good lord, the food (ah, Scooter’s, I hardly knew ye), and of course, all of our wonderful Chicago-based friends. But FB makes it so easy to keep track of everyone—I actually sometimes forget that friends who used to be in Chicago are now in L.A., for example, because I know exactly what theyre up to. What I am gaining: Snow that isn’t “lake effect” and traffic circles and baseball teams that sometimes actually win games and freedom from encountering TBOX revelers and apparently a great competitive karaoke scene (!?) and running into Donald Rumsfeld in the CVS and having the freedom to put ketchup on my hot dog in broad daylight without fear of reprimand. We are excited for our impending adventure, and Linc is super psyched to have a “singul family home” as he wrote in his school journal, because “I hav wanted a yarrd almost my hole life.” Arlington, Virginia is a lovely town, and full of yards for Linc, but really, my home is wherever Andres Dhokai and my boys are. I will be happy wherever they are. Plus, now me and FLOTUS can hang out. More news to come and we’ll be having a “come drink all our booze so we don’t have to move it” party, so stay tuned….
