Friends, what I am going to say will offend some people, but it needs to be said: It isnt helpful to get up on a soap box and rant about depression and suicide unless you have suffered the heartbreaking effects of one or both. (For the record, I sincerely hope that you do not ever understand because it would require experiencing the heartache that comes with both.) Depression is an illness, and, in many cases, it is treatable with medication, therapy, and support. However, it isnt something that can be prayed away; prayer certainly helps some people, but it wont stabilize the imbalances of biological chemicals in the brain and body. Modern medicine has developed many, life-saving medications to treat a wide variety of depression and mood disorders. Diet, exercise, prayer, life-style changes all help also; however, in many cases, they will not work as well without appropriate therapy with a professional and/or medication prescribed by a physician Suicide is the most heartbreaking, gut-wrenching decision that a few, severely depressed people make. It is usually made in response to an on-going problem, catastrophic event, or untreated/misdiagnosed depression. There is no way to describe the heartache and fallout that consumes the loved ones of a suicide, and every single case is different ... because every person is different. ... The one thing that all the victims have in common is that WE are completely broken and soul-shattered after the fact. I write this tonight after reading a lot of very judgmental posts on depression and suicide. There was a time that I was guilty of spewing my uninformed opinions, too. However, this past year, after losing my husband to suicide and my sister to depression, I now know that I know very little except the pain those things inflict upon everyone connected. So, before you feel compelled to write about something that you have not personally experienced, then dont! Say a prayer instead - for the victims and your own awareness. Read an informed article or book about the subject, but do it to enhance your own understanding. Say something loving - always - to everyone ... because it might be the last thing you get to say ... or it might be the only message that makes a difference between life and death to a heartbroken child of God. Peace be with you all, Katie
